Sustainable shopping FAQs

Find out everything you need to know about This is Unfolded and our sustainable, eco-friendly clothes with a positive impact.

If you have any questions that are not answered below, please email support@thisisunfolded.com

As a small and growing business with a BIG mission we’re constantly changing, evolving and improving our processes. We try our best to keep on top of all the information we share, but if we've missed anything - please don’t hesitate to reach out!

Shipping & delivery

How do I track my order?

As soon as your parcel has been handed over to Royal Mail, you'll be getting an email with your tracking information so you can see where your parcel is on its journey to you.

If you have any questions about your delivery, or if there's anything else we can help with in the meantime, feel free to send our Customer Service team a message at support@thisisunfolded.com and we will get back to you.

Can I change my address?

We may be able to change your delivery address, but we can’t guarantee it. If you'd like us to look into this for you, or if you have any queries, then please contact our customer service team at support@thisisunfolded.com, and we'll do our best to help you.

We have a cut-off time of address changes and cancellations due to logistics when it is approaching delivery.

Can I edit/cancel my order?

We place our orders with factories when you order, which means that we’re generally not able to cancel your order after it’s been placed. Our team will do everything they can to advise and find a solution, so feel free to get in touch at support@thisisunfolded.com.

We also have options once your order arrives to swap within our community, or return.

What is the shipping process?

Fashion is one of the most polluting industries in the world. This is Unfolded does things differently. We make clothes after you order, meaning we can cut waste and reduce the impact on the environment - and at the same time we can invest the savings in doing good.

It does mean that orders take a little longer to arrive. When a collection goes on sale, it usually takes about 4-6 weeks for items to be delivered. In some cases it can be a bit longer, in some significantly shorter. We'll update you with all the information about your product's journey so you always know what's happening.

Delivery is free for orders over £50. For orders under £50, a delivery fee of £3.99 will be added at checkout.

What is the packaging made of?

All packaging bags – garment and outer are recycled and landfill biodegradable, this means that you can just bin them with your general waste and they will break down in a matter of a few months instead of hundreds of years, pretty nice right?!

We’re always trying to look for the best solutions, so at some point in the future, we are looking to move towards using paper which can be easier to recycle in urban areas.

We don’t yet feel comfortable using paper bags (we don’t want soggy clothes and British weather is a little unreliable..) however it is something that we’re continuing to explore.

Help & Issues

What do I do if there's a problem with my order?

We are really sorry if you have received a faulty or damaged item.

In these rare circumstances, we will of course look to offer you a solution, whether that is an exchange of a faulty item or if you've received the wrong size by mistake, a refund or another solution that works better for you.

The first thing to do is to send us a photo of your item, showing any faults or issues - if it's the wrong size, a note with the measurements is also very helpful. Send this to support@thisisunfolded.com and include your order number, and we'll get right on sorting things out for you!

I've not received all the items in my order

Some orders might be delivered to you in multiple deliveries. This can be due to the size, value and the weight of items ordered or that the items have been available to be collected from our factory partner. This can also happen when items are ordered from multiple collections. We will send you updates about all the items in your order, even if they are not arriving in the same shipment.

Please check your order confirmation email for further information on when your item/s are expected to arrive.

If you need help tracking down an item, get in touch with our customer service team on support@thisisunfolded.com and we’ll be happy to help!

PS. We use partners to offset our logistics emissions and use biodegradable bags to ensure our environmental footprint is as small as possible.

Swapping

About Swaps by Unfolded

This is Unfolded does things differently to cut waste and make positive impact. That’s why we and our community choose to swap instead of returning. It’s an approach we’re passionate about, as returns so often lead to landfill and waste.

We know everything you order from us might not fit perfectly, or you might not love every piece. That's why we have set up a swap solution, where we offer free postage so you can send any single item you want to swap to someone else free of charge - and the same for your swap partner.

It's a whole new way of making the most of what you love, and swapping what you don't.

Get started here!

How can I swap my item?

Instead of returning, swapping an item that isn’t quite right for you helps us do better for the planet and the people we support. Let’s help you get started with your first swap!

Just visit our new Swap Shop here, where you’ll also find an in-depth how-to-guide. It’s pretty simple: List your item for swapping, find something you’d like in return, request a match, and get free postage for your first item to send to someone else.

How do I list an item for swapping?

Visit our new Swap Shop here and you’ll find full instructions in the comprehensive how-to-guide.

How do I get my free postage label?

You’ve listed your item and arranged a swap - what’s next? Unfolded offers one free postage label per order to send any single item to someone else - and the same for your swap partner.

This will be available in the Swap Shop shortly, but for now, go to www.thisisunfolded.com to get your free label. Just log in, find your order and click on 'Redeem swap token'. You’ll need to fill in your own address and the address of the person you want to send the item to. We will process your request, and as soon as that's approved, you’ll get the label and full postage instructions by email so you can send your item on to your swap partner, who will do the same. It can be handy to share proof of postage with your swap buddy so they know your parcel is on the way.

How do I post my swap?

When using the postage label provided by This is Unfolded, please apply the label to the outer packaging and take to your nearest post office. Please remember to obtain proof of postage and share this with your swap partner!

Returns & refunds

Can I swap or return an item?

First of all, we really hope that you do love your clothes. However, if a piece doesn’t quite work for you, we have a few options.

This is Unfolded has a growing community of like-minded shoppers, where you can swap anything that isn't right for you and get something else great instead. We offer free postage for your first swap.

The best way to find someone to swap with is to use Swaps by Unfolded.

It's simple, fun and great for the environment - returns are really quite damaging and costly, so swapping is a much better option. Thank you for doing things differently with us!

Returns are a quick route to more landfill, and they affect the good we can do, as well as creating more harm to the environment.

We do accept returns, but we hope you'll consider swapping instead! To start the return process for any items, please get in touch by emailing support@thisisunfolded.com within 14 days of receiving your order.

You can read our full refund policy here.

How long do I have to return an item?

You need to tell us within 14 days of receiving your goods that you want to return them. You then have another 14 days to return the goods once you've been in touch.

Check out our full returns policy here

Our prices

The price you pay with most other brands has a huge amount of profit built into it to take into account the mass amounts of items produced that aren’t sold, the sky-high return rates that most modern brands face and a chunky margin for retailers.

High street brands operate on a 5-6x markup model on every item. This means that if an items costs them £20, they’ll sell it for £100+. The reason for such a high charge is that their model is full of waste, which eats up profits.

This is Unfolded is different!

By reducing waste in our supply chain we can operate on a 3-3.8x markup which allows us to pay all the relevant taxes, fund the Unfolded Worker Fund, support children in education with Pratham, cover all logistics costs, offset carbon emission and then pay our staff and fund our growth.

We highlight this as we stand behind our mission to make a great product for a great price. This is super important to us as we believe that if you’re going to change an industry then you need to make sure you don’t exclude people just due to price.

You’ll see a traditional price shown on ever product page so that you can see how much our items would typically cost with other brands based on this markup model.

Importantly to us, there isn’t a compromise on quality when you buy from This is Unfolded – we’re using the same high quality fabrics and our production is both ethical and sustainable. Our focus is on reducing all the waste in the traditional retail model and this means we can provide a better deal to everyone involved.

Clothes & Sizing

What sizes are available?

Unfolded clothes are available in sizes 6-24.

We’re demand-led so if you want us to make other sizes or other types of clothing please let us know here

We fit all products on a model with a height of 5’5’’ and if you go to the customer section on each product you'll see a range of heights from our customer day shoot. As a small business, we're working to cater for a diverse as possible group of customers!

Not sure what size to choose? Check our full size guide for more.

In most cases, you’ll most likely fit the size you usually buy - we are using the same sizing as H&M. We have a full-size guide with the key measurements for all the products here - and there are some notes on each product page as well. If you’re between sizes, we’d probably recommend sizing up. If you have any questions on measurements, do let us know at support@thisisunfolded.com.

Are the clothes made to order?

To cut the waste from the clothes production, Unfolded clothes only start after orders come in, but it is not a traditional 'made to order' model, so particular items or sizes can still get sold out. We commit to a certain amount of fabric with the factories, who then set up a size curve and the dimensions for each size are entered into a computer system to calculate the most efficient way to cut the fabric. This is all so that we don't create any waste in the process - and it means that some sizes can get sold out, even if production hasn’t started yet.

We want to make sure we offer affordable, sustainable clothes, so currently our production setup operates with a size curve of orders in size 6 - 24.

Each product has a number of elements that need to be cut, stitched and finished.

The dimensions for each size are entered into a computer system to calculate the most efficient way to cut the fabric so that no unnecessary wastage is created. Each section of the garment is then cut in layers, then stitched and finished. You can read the full story of the product journey

We are looking at ways we can make an even wider range of options available, such as petite and tall, as adding different options would require new setups at the factory.

As we scale we are exploring ways we can make an even wider range of options available, such as petite and tall, but only when we have the volumes required to make these viable for our partner factories.

We can notify you if a product comes back on sale - if you select a sold-out size, there should be an option to 'Notify me', where you can enter your email address. If we get any returns or are able to produce more of this particular item, we will let you know!

Will an item come back into stock?

We can notify you if a product comes back on sale - if you select a sold-out product, there should be an option to 'Notify me', where you can enter your email address. If we get any returns or are able to produce more of this particular item, we will let you know!

And sign up to our email list here to get a heads up whenever new collections launch - that way you can get in early in the future!

What are relaxed and extended waist measurements?

Some items that have stretchy waistbands, such as the Lana trousers, show both relaxed and extended waist measurements. The relaxed measurement show the item as it is ‘on the hanger’ - with the waistband not stretched out at all. Extended means when the waistband has been stretched out fully as far as it goes. Your own waist should be somewhere in between these two measurements. The amount of stretch in the waist is indicated by the difference between relaxed and extended.

If you have any questions about these measurements, let us know on support@thisisunfolded.com and we’ll be happy to help.

Caring for your clothes

All our products have washing instructions on their care label, but they usually don't require special methods, you can wash everything at low temperatures and similar colours to avoid dramas. You can also find all the care instructions on the product page on our website too - and there's more information about all the fabric composition for every item here.

If you have any questions you can get in touch with our customer service team at support@thisisunfolded.com

Impact & Transparency

Making sustainable clothes

We make quality clothes that look good, feel good and do good.

Sustainability is really important to us. First and foremost, sustainability for us means reducing the waste associated with overproduction. Past this founding principle we ensure we make sustainable decisions at every step of the production process.

Read more about our commitment to sustainability here.

We work with a charity partner, Pratham, to make donations with every purchase. We believe it’s important to have someone that really understands this work as a partner to maximise the impact that can be generated.

Each purchase supports education for a child in India for a set period of time, which is shown on each product. The support given will increase the more items you add to your order. For example, each dress gives two months' support and a top, skirt or pyjamas supports a child for one month.

We selected Pratham due to their transparency, the % of the funds they raise that goes to the children and their long history in this sector.

You can find out more about the impact of our collections on our Impact page

Where are the clothes made?

All our clothes are currently made in carefully selected factories in India. We have a close partnership with our factory partners, and work especially close with the team at the main factory producing clothes for Unfolded customers in Noida, near Delhi in India. The people who make our clothes are as important as the people who buy them!

Our factory partners are Oeko-Tex approved, are certified for GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard for organic cottons), GRS (Global Recycle Standard for recycled polys) and OCS (Organic Content Standard for fabric blends with organic cotton).

We only partner with Sedex-rated factories, short for Supplier Ethical Data Exchange. The Sedex database is a widely recognised online platform where registered companies openly share information about their social and ethical performance. Workers in our partner factories are ensured good working conditions and legally protected rights.

Find out more about our factories.

We don’t currently name the factories we work with as they work with a range of partners, and worry that some of the marketing we do around changing the fashion industry wouldn’t be liked by other brands and don’t want to lose their business.

As we scale and produce more with these factories we hope to change this and ensure they feel comfortable sharing their story as well!

How much are workers paid?

All Unfolded factory partners are selected in part because they are paying good wages to their staff compared to other organisations. In addition, working with Unfolded means that we pay workers higher wages than other brands. Our size and the fact that the factories we work with, also produce clothes for other brands means that we can’t increase wages directly for workers in these factories.

Instead, working with our partners we came up with the Unfolded Worker Fund. Through this we pay a bonus to all staff at our partner factory after each collection has been delivered.

These bonuses are paid  to the full staff at the factories even if only a relatively small % of workers work on our clothes. We do this so as not to create an imbalance at the factory or conflict between workers.

The amount of each bonus is linked to the performance of the collection and can vary up to 10-15% of their monthly wage.

As we grow and take more capacity with partner factories we hope to directly increase wages across the factories and move from the worker fund model.

What is the production process like?

We design our clothes in collaboration with our community - our latest collection had input from over 3000 women before we launched it.

The dimensions for each size are entered into a computer system to calculate the most efficient way to cut the fabric so that no unnecessary wastage is created. Each section of the garment is then cut in layers, then stitched and finished. You can read the full story of the product journey

How do you support children in education?

Every piece of eco-friendly clothing bought from This is Unfolded supports a child living in India, near the communities where our clothes are made. We fund children learning to read and write with leading Indian education charity - Pratham.

Pratham powers This is Unfolded's education support in India. When you buy a dress from Unfolded, you support a child in education for 2 months, and a top funds 1 month of education. So far more Unfolded shoppers have funded more than 4000 children to learn to read and write, in the communities near where the clothes are made in India. You can read more about Pratham here.

We believe that empowering the communities with education fosters long term benefit and contributes to a better future for everyone. So thank you for being a part of creating positive change with your shopping!

Certifications and factory details

Our factory partners are members of Sedex, short forSupplier Ethical Data Exchange. The Sedex database is a widely recognised online platform where registered companies openly share information about their social and ethical performance.

Our factory partners are Oeko-Tex approved. They are certified for GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard for organic cottons), GRS (Global Recycle Standard for recycled polys) and OCS (Organic Content Standard for fabric blends with organic cotton).

Oeko-Tex textiles and fabrics are certified free of harmful chemicals and are safe for human use. Organic certification means that textile and fabric products are grown according to strict guidelines on the use of petroleum based fertilisers, pesticides and synthetic products.

Reactive dyes are used, which are REACH compliant. REACH stands for registration, evaluation, authorisation and restriction of chemicals. You must comply with REACH if you manufacture or supply articles, or are importing articles from outside the EU.

Reactive dye is reacts with fibres to form a covalent link, that is forming a permanent attachment in the fibre that is not removed by repeated treatment with boiling water under neutral conditions. Consequently, the dyes become parts of the fibre, leading to outstanding colour fastness to wash.

All the details about fabric composition, dyes and materials is available here.

We don’t currently name the factories we work with as they work with a range of partners and worry that some of the marketing we do around changing the fashion industry wouldn’t be liked by other brands and don’t want to lose their business.

We wish the fashion industry wasn’t like this but sadly it is and as such we need to respect our partners requests.

As we grow and start to produce more with these factories we hope to change this and ensure they feel comfortable sharing their story as well!
